Loaded on an SD card with the large set of data bases, it runs but doesn't see the data bases. Run from main memory, it works as advertised. Interestingly, if it is present in both main memory and on the SD card, it can be run from the SD card and it sees the data bases. Probably this is a major clue to the problem. Perhaps the databases can live on the SD card. It isn't clear to me whether the associated Great Circle calculator program uses a spherical earth, or the reference ellipsoid. So, I use the other Great Circle calculator (Navgate). Unfortunately, Navigate can't use the databases ... or at least not directly.
