FreeJongg v1.0c

Size: 136 KB
Date: June 4, 2004 (Updated)
Type: Freeware
Requirements:
  • Palm IIIc
  • Palm OS v3.5
Download:
  • freejongg.zip

Author: William Osborne
Email: wbo@freeshell.org

Description:
FreeJongg is a freeware adaptation of the classic game of Mahjongg Solitaire.

Your objective is to remove all the tiles from the playing field by following a simple set of matching rules.

Features:
320x320 High-res graphics
Supports Palm OS 5
Includes 15 unique layouts
Includes 7 Table Backgrounds

Objective
The goal of the game is to clear the board by removing all 144 tiles from the table.

Tiles must be removed in pairs. A pair consists of two tiles which both are both free and match each other.

A tile is free when:
- No other tile is lying above or is partially covering it
- No other tile is lying directly to the left or to the right of it

Generally, a tile matches another if both tiles are identical. Exceptions to this rule are the Flowers and Seasons tiles.

A Flower tile (BAM, MUM, ORC, PLUM) will match any other Flower tile. A Season tile (WIN, SPR, SUM, AUT) will match any other Season tile. All other suites require an exact match.

Each tile appears four times in a given board. The only exceptions to this are the Flowers and Seasons tiles which appear only once each.

Update Description:
Version 1.0c:

  • Fixed a bug that caused the Shuffle Tiles option to freeze
  • Moved graphics resources into main PRC. FreeJongg can now be run entirely from an expansion card

Works great on my Zire71 and my SD card. Only complaint is that the tiles are a bit small even on my hi-res screen.

I got it for my palm M130 I rocked.

Great game, especially for a freeware app. I loaded FreeJong onto my Palm IIIc about a month or so ago and have been addicted since. Despite a lack of scorekeeping, the gameplay is good (though I don't imagine there's a way to really make gameplay bad on this game, it's a matter of tapping tiles) and the overall experience is well supplemented by the graphics and color. On my Palm IIIc, the game looked great and on my friends Tungsten C, the graphics with the higher resolution are simply stunning. Great game, vry addicting and does great for passing the time during lectures and meetings as well as church service every sunday.

Very very nice.

I have looked for a while for a free Mah Jong for my Palm. This is a GREAT application. Does not keep time or score like most, but that is ok with me. I beamed it to my Mom's pda & now she is addicted too!

Is fantastic, i totally love this program. I play mahjong for years already on internet and to find a free version as good as the one i am used to play has been great news for me, I downloaded it the same day i got my zire31 :) ...is really a must have!

I have sorely missed the nice, simple mahjong application I used to have on my palm V, which wouldn't run on any later versions of Palm OS. Now, finally I have a replacement, one that even surpasses the old one but is not so feature-laden as to consume huge amounts of memory just to play. I want to add my thanks as well to all the others. It runs just fine on my Tungsten T5.

I play Freejongg almost every day and this implementation is terrific. (I had forgotten that I posted a review earlier this year about an auto-off problem I was experiencing and another review about its immediate resolution...) Funny thing (well, to me) is that only a couple days ago did I realize that I could choose different board layouts. From menu, select Game | New Game and pick a layout and tap OK to see what it looks like. Some are interesting, some are fun, and some border on impossible. It was nice to find this little surprise after so many months of playing. Thank you, William, for such a great app, and especially for releasing it as freeware.

GREAT! GREAT! GREAT! Regarding the fact that some setups might be unsolvable: Just try it several times. I tred #16951 5 or 6 times and finally solved it.

*** [Jul 24, 2004] by Whak
Fun but this isn't a true Mah Jongg game - there is no guarantee of a solution. I've had games start where immediately I see a "no moves possible" dialog. So if you find yourself losing most of the games, you are not alone.

This mahjongg game works like a charm on my Palm T3. My aging eyes have adapted to the size of the tiles. I was complaining about hidden, but free, tiles but have now learned to press my stylus on the partially hidden tile to discover what tile it is. I would give this an excellent rating, but I can't win the dang game! I play at least twice a day and win maybe once in 30 games. I have never had this problem with other mahjongg games. Is anyone else having such a hard time as I at winning!?

***** [Jun 5, 2004] by Karen
I love it! It works perfectly on my Zire 71.

***** [May 31, 2004] by Smith
This is a great program. Thank you so much!! I use it on my Clie PEG-T615C and just beamed it to my older Palm IIIc. Works great on both. Thanks again for a wonderful product.

**** [May 27, 2004] by AY
The only reason it don't get 5 stars is b/c this doesn't have the one feature I could've REALLY used... running it off an SD card. My Zire71 is strapped on space, so being able to do so would've allowed me to utilize every precious bit of internal memory. That's the only reason it doesn't have a place on my PDA... or the mem card.

***** [May 27, 2004] by Jeffrey
Works great on the Tungsten E. Only drawback, the small tiles leave my eyes tired. Is there any way to make an option for fewer tiles and larger ones? The best Palm game in my opinion.

***** [May 19, 2004] by Mario
Excellent! The only game up to now that will last on my T3. Forget all the other Mahjongg games you have to pay for. This one is free and beats 'em all.

***** [May 19, 2004] by Chris
Great datebook replacement. Free of all the iconpalooza like in DateBK. I especially like the month view in HiRes. Go4it!

***** [May 19, 2004] by Chris
Great game. Nice Artwork, really a piece of HiRes. Works almost perfectly on my T1, except for the already mentioned "Shuffle Board" bug. But it's definitely worth waiting for the next Version instead of paying money for a commercial product.

***** [May 18, 2004] by rahzaM
This is one of my favourite time killers, because it runs painfully slow.

**** [May 17, 2004] by John
Great game! The only issue is the Shuffle Board Option, if used when there are no more moves left, device freezes and a soft reset has to be perform on my Tungsten-E

***** [May 15, 2004] by Marcus
Excellent application. Better than versions of the game that I have paid for in the past. Actually deleted the puchased version of the game I already had in favor of this one. Tiles are easy to recognize and the graphics are great. Only thing I would suggest is to decrease the time it takes to select a tile - when you tap there is a delay before the tile is highlighted. Perhaps in a future version? Thanks for the great software!!!

**** [May 14, 2004] by Jose
Great game, plays wonderful on my Treo 270. The only issue is the Shuffle Board Option, when used the device freezes and reset has to be perform.

*** [May 13, 2004] by Cram
Would be **** if it wasn't sooooo slow on my original Zire. What can it be doing ?

*** [May 11, 2004] by Julian Barker
Runs painfully slow on my Clie - it takes over a second of pressing on a tie for the program to register I have done anything.

***** [May 11, 2004] by Mazhar
Excellent piece of work. One of my favourite time killers.

***** [May 10, 2004] by Jose Brinkmann
Great game !! please keep it up !! Is there any chance of a low resolution release for older palms (ie. Zire 21?).

***** [May 6, 2004] by David
It helps to read the manual! :-) Posted my last review prematurely...the one thing I "dinged" this for was that there was only one layout...turns out I just being too stupid to notice where to change the layout. I just tried version 1.0b and you can now set the layouts to change at random which makes it even more user-friendly. If you're looking for a Mahjongg game, don't pass this one up!

**** [May 5, 2004] by David
There are very few free taipei/mahjongg type games out there and this one works flawlessly on my hi-res Clie NX80V. One of the few things that keeps me from giving it 5 *'s is that it only supports a single tile layout (PJongg, my favorite shareware mahjongg, supports configurable layouts which adds greatly to the variety). Still, as others have pointed out, this free program more than holds its own against most paid versions. Nice work!

***** [Apr 30, 2004] by Richie
Hard to find a freeware mahjong for palm. This one even supports new high-res palm devices! thanks, thanks, thanks!

***** [Apr 26, 2004] by Dan
The best thing to happen to my palm Tungsten in a long time! LOVE this game. It runs flawlessly and the rendering of the tiles is great!

***** [Apr 26, 2004] by Chance
I have paid for some Majongg games that were less impressive than this. I am running it on a Palm Tungsten T3 and it 'auto-offed' just fine. I went to the authors site to make sure I had the most current version. http://wbo.freeshell.org/freejongg/download.php

***** [Apr 20, 2004] by Andy Dufek
I experienced a won't-auto-off problem and was immediately contacted by the author of the program who pointed me to version 1.0a which fixed the problem. It's a terrific app. Thank you for releasing it as freeware.

*** [Apr 20, 2004] by Andy Dufek
This is a terrific program. After seeing it run on my boss' T|E, it has .almost. inspired me to upgrade from my 160x160 Treo 90... :) "So why the middle-of-the road rating?" you ask. I must echo something mentioned in Robin Hall's earlier review: this app disables the Palm auto-off and if you fail to switch apps or power off the handheld, it will remain ON until you pick it up later. This has happened to me three times and I've yet to find a setting (I thought perhaps the clock was contributing, but no dice) which fixes the problem. Sadly, I gotta put this one aside until that gets resolved.

***** [Apr 5, 2004] by Les
This game is really cool. And it's FREE! Way to go!

***** [Apr 4, 2004] by Denise
Very nice! Works well on my m505, and the tiles are much easier to see than other games that involve money. Good range of layouts too.

** [Apr 1, 2004] by Graham
Doesn't like hires screen - the whole game area is squashed up into the top quarter of the screen and is totally unplayable.

*** [Apr 1, 2004] by Robin Hall
The game is great and the graphics very good on my Clie should rate 5*. BUT the game appears to disable screen Auto-off, so if you stop playing without moving to another app or powering off, you find youself with a drained battery.

***** [Apr 1, 2004] by Edmund Hon
Works flawlessly on my Zire 71. Many different layouts and backgrounds. An excellent implementation, and it's free!

***** [Mar 31, 2004] by Ghislain

**** [Mar 31, 2004] by Kostas
I love this game. I just played my first game on my palm m130 and I was imprest. The tiles are a bit small but you get used to them.

***** [Mar 31, 2004] by palmguy
This is fantastic on my zire 71! Download it now!
